“Educated touch is immediate and direct engagement, contact with the palpable essence of living reality, a concrete combination of flesh and consciousness that creates a medium for the development of creative physical improvements and the possibility of a path through the fear, the confusion, and the nonsense.”
-Deane Juhan , Touched by the Goddess

Touch is a powerful form of connection and healing. When offered in a safe and compassionate environment, touch has the potential to free the body, mind, and spirit. Sore muscles and places of holding are relieved. The mind softens and lets go. Feelings of anger, fear, and confusion can be felt and distilled. The overwhelming sense of isolation is diminished. The act of finding safety in the body and in human contact allows mental clarity, joy, and contentment to arise.

Physical numbing is a common symptom of trauma. Bodywork and touch therapy can reawaken those silent areas and bring grounding and awareness back into the picture. It also provides a context for safe touch and intimacy.

Healing trauma through the body is largely about resetting boundaries and building a safe container to hold and experience symptoms. Becoming willing to feel the sensations of trauma rather than suppress or act out from them is major success. Be it through touch therapy or simple guided exercises, bringing a gentle awareness into the felt experience of the body is a fundamental component of trauma recovery.

The Buddha taught that there are three types of knowledge that lead to the development of wisdom: oral, reason, and intuition. While all three are needed for true wisdom to arise, the Buddha places intuition as the most powerful form of knowledge. Developing an intimate relationship with the language of our bodies allows intuition to naturally arise. In this context, the body is a sacred text. Through thoughts, emotions, images, and felt senses we come to hear the still small voice within and cultivate the intuition and wisdom needed to navigate our lives. Both meditation and touch therapy, as well as other body-centered practices, cultivate a relationship with the body that empowers us to live from a place of deep connection and authenticity.
